Rusty Press was started in 2021. With three books in hardcopy and multiple eBooks, I learned two things: you get lost in the large on-line bookstores and they're all about making money. I had no way of giving a book away if I wanted. I also have no intention of doing book tours as the traditional publishing houses want. Rusty Press is a platform for me to share my books and essays.
I am a retired psychotherapist who, after retiring, has followed my passions and dreams. My wife, Pamela, and I spent the first ten years of retirement as nomadic RVer’s spending over 90% of our life off-the-grid far out into the Sonoran Desert or in the dense cedar and hemlock forest of Glacier National Park in northwestern Montana where we served as volunteer campground hosts.
An unabashed tree-hugger and environmentalist, my post-retirement advocation became wildlife management, living among and helping keep deer, mountain goats, big horn sheep, bears and other creatures safe. Many of my stories carry a strong environmental message.
Living in a twenty-foot camper trailer we called Nitsitapiisinni (Blackfeet for ‘our way of life’), I enjoyed spending free time writing stories and hiking through the wilderness.
Health issues brought us back east to be near family. We have a wonderful 1.5 acre hollow I call Black Fox Hollow filled with native flora and fauna. I can sit in front of our large widow looking out on the hollow and get inspiration as I write.
Pamela and I are on the steering committee for a local environmental center and I volunteer at the local National Park Service Trail of Tears Commemorative Park.
My books are all fiction. There are two series among them. The Coillernach series is a fantasy series with witches and elves. The Rusty Gerber series is set in the high desert of northeastern Arizona. You will find that all of them have some environmental or social message. I have included some of my essays here from my Thoughts and Philosophy page. They are non-fiction, predominantly philosophical.
AGEH was my first novel. As the title tells, it is about a group of genetically engineered people who must survive the attempts of the man who paid for their creation to destroy them.
The New Prince is the first of three books in this fantasy series. In this book the people of Coillearnach, hidden in the Cumberland Plateau, must defend themselves from the great-grandson of Morgana Pendragon who is seeking revenge.
The second of three books in this fantasy series, The Tree of Life is set in northwestern Montana where a shy dwarven woman becomes the hero who saves an entire dwarf clan and a famous Tree of Life.
This is the third of the Coillearnach series. A brilliant Hogboon looses the love of his life and inadvertently makes a crack in time in his attempt to go back before her death and save her. The McAllistair clan and Coillearnach faculty must figure out the mystery and close the crack.
First of a series of three books that center around Rusty Gerber, his Kawaika friends and the secret Memorial Foundation. Rusty Gerber buys a large ranch in northeast Arizona with the intent of becoming a recluse. It doesn't work out as he expected. In the first book, The Tillman Place (2021), he ends up helping a young Kawaika woman with her PhD research, foiling a gang of art thieves, and becoming more involved with his community than ever before.
This is the second of three in the Rusty Gerber series. In this story Rusty's archeology friends make the connection between the account of a 17th century Spanish Monk and the Kawaika Village they are excavating. I can't tell you any more or it would be a spoiler.
In eastern cultures most dragons are good and an old blessing was to say "may your child be a dragon." A young geologist of Japanese descent discovers that he is Ryuhiko, a red dragon and he must stand along against an evil spirit determined to poison the Triple Divide.
TJ is a hotelier in Key West who owns one of the largest sailing catamarans in the world. Mrs. G is a Savannah chef and the widow of a Navy diver. After finding the diary of the wife of late 17th century privateer, they go on one of the wildest treasure hunt imaginable. Well, you probably can't imagine. Just saying.
Papa Littlebear is what children and his followers called him. Trouble is most likely what would come to mind for those who would destroy the mountain. A big oil company thinks it has everything covered because the local judge is in their pocket, but that is yet to be seen.
A group of people attempting to flee what they feel is an unjust system are pursued by an Army officer convinced that they are some sort of traitors. They were promised by two sisters that if they could get a group together they would be given an escape. The sisters and the escape were nothing like the group expected.
The government has passed the 'Good American Act' that makes anyone the government doesn't like an enemy of the state. A hospital physician and a Native American colleague go underground to provide medical care for the disenfranchised who either could not get care or could not afford it.
